Buying cheat sheet

What to look for before you buy.

The short version of the RedAndWhiteMagz.com buying guides: the specs that make a real difference for most people, and the extras you can usually skip. Models and prices change quickly, but these fundamentals don’t.

Buying priorities by device
DevicePrioritizeUsually skipFull guide
Laptop16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB SSD, a screen rated at 300 nits or brighter, and a processor from a recent generation.A top-tier chip for browsing, office work and streaming, or a 4K panel on a 13- to 14-inch screen, which mostly costs battery life.Laptop buying guide
SmartphoneA long software-support promise (five years or more), a large main camera sensor and a battery that comfortably lasts a full day.Megapixel counts on their own, and the top storage tier if your photos already back up to the cloud.Phone camera explainer
Wi-Fi routerWi-Fi 6 or newer, WPA3 security, automatic firmware updates, and a mesh system if your home has thick walls or several floors.A Wi-Fi 7 router before your phones and laptops support it. Wi-Fi 6 already keeps up with most home internet plans.Wi-Fi 7 vs Wi-Fi 6E
Wireless earbudsA secure, comfortable fit, effective noise cancelling and a codec your phone supports: AAC on iPhone, and AAC, LDAC or aptX on many Android phones.Hi-res codec badges your phone can't use, and companion-app extras you'll rarely open.Earbuds buying guide

Specs are a starting point, not the whole story. Before you buy, check reviews of the exact model you’re considering, and confirm the return policy.

Tech essentials

Five habits that keep you safer online.

You don’t need to be an expert to protect your accounts and devices. These habits protect you against the most common attacks, and you can start most of them in just a few minutes.

Want the details? The RedAndWhiteMagz.com cybersecurity hub walks through each step, and our passkeys explainer shows how to make the switch.

  1. Use passkeys or two-step verification

Passkeys resist phishing and are unique to every site, and two-step verification adds a second check if a password leaks. Start with your email account, because it can reset almost everything else.

  2. Let a password manager do the remembering

It creates a long, unique password for every account and fills it in for you, so one breach can't unlock the rest of your online life.

  3. Install updates promptly

Many updates patch security holes, and once a fix is public, attackers target devices that have not installed it. Turn on automatic updates for your phone, computer and browser, and for your router where it is offered.

  4. Pause before you click

Scam messages invent urgency: a parcel problem, a locked account, a prize. Open the official app or type the website address yourself instead of tapping the link.

  5. Back up with the 3-2-1 rule

Keep three copies of important files, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site or in the cloud. Then test a restore every so often.

Jargon, decoded

Tech terms you’ll see everywhere, explained.

Spec sheets and launch events are full of acronyms. These are the terms RedAndWhiteMagz.com readers ask about most, explained in plain English.

NPU (neural processing unit)
Usually a part of a modern processor built for AI tasks such as background blur, live caption translation and photo editing. It runs them faster, and on far less power, than the CPU.
TOPS
Trillions of operations per second, a headline measure of AI performance. Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs, for example, require an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or more.
Passkey
A password replacement built on a cryptographic key pair that is locked to one website. You unlock it with your face, fingerprint or device PIN, and a password manager can sync it across your devices.
Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be)
The newest certified Wi-Fi generation, with Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn) still being finalized. It adds 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and Multi-Link Operation, which lets a device use more than one band at the same time.
Wi-Fi 6E
Wi-Fi 6 extended into the 6 GHz band, which has more room and less interference than the crowded 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, though over a shorter range.
ANC (active noise cancelling)
Microphones measure outside sound and the earbuds play an inverted signal to cancel it. It works best on steady, low-pitched noise such as engines and air conditioning.
Bluetooth codec
The method used to compress audio over Bluetooth. SBC is the baseline every classic Bluetooth headphone supports, AAC is what iPhones use, and LDAC or aptX can carry more detail on supported Android phones.
Refresh rate (Hz)
How many times per second a screen redraws its image. A 90 to 120 Hz display makes scrolling and games look noticeably smoother than the older 60 Hz standard.
Pixel binning
Merging groups of neighboring sensor pixels into one larger pixel to capture more light. It is why a 200 MP phone camera usually saves 12 MP photos by default.
NVMe SSD
Storage that connects over PCIe instead of the older SATA interface. It is often several times faster at big transfers, so large files copy much more quickly, though apps open only a little faster.

How we work

How RedAndWhiteMagz.com earns your trust.

Good tech advice depends on good sources. Every guide on RedAndWhiteMagz.com follows the same four steps, set out in full in our editorial policy.

  1. Research

Stories start with primary sources: official spec sheets, standards and certification bodies such as the IEEE and the Wi-Fi Alliance, and security guidance from agencies like CISA.

  2. Compare

We weigh features, price and real-world performance against rivals, and we state clearly whether a product was tested hands-on.

  3. Explain

We write in plain English, define jargon the first time it appears, and focus on what each feature means for you.

  4. Update

When a mistake slips through, we correct it openly and note the change on the page instead of quietly editing it.
